Night Review

Last month’s assignment was ‘Night’. This theme was set to test our members skills in working in fully manual, using composition and working creatively in the theme of night photography. It was also set to show our students the importance of post processing your photography.

We had loads of amazing entries, so it was hard to choose our favourites. But here at The School of Photography we have picked a few of the photographs we liked the best. To join in with these assignments please sign up to TSOP Membership here.

Great response to the theme ‘Night’, this photo was taken in Reykjavik, Iceland by Ragnhildur Guðrún Finnbjörnsdóttir - the picture is of the Hallgrimskirkja (Hallgrim’s Church) - shot at F1.8 - 1/200 Seconds - ISO 2000

  • This shot is composed perfectly with great symmetrical composition

  • The two people make the shot - they give a sense of scale to the grand window central in the frame.

Taken by Sue Doyle, this is her ‘first attempt’ at night photography - 13 seconds - F/14 - 11.5mm focal length - ISO 100

  • The composition of the shot is fantastic - the jetties in the foreground, lead you into the building in the background with the wheel being the focal point of the shot.

Great response to the theme ‘Night’, taken with Canon 600D - shot at ISO 100 - f/3.5 - 10 seconds -18mm focal length

  • This shot has the feeling of an eery old a train station - almost cinematic in it’s look.

  • The shot is well lit by using a small torch to light the foreground - helps balances out the lighting of the scene.

This fantastic portrait was taken in Hong Kong by Lou Wisdom and our favourite from the theme - The reasons we liked this shot:

  • Great composition - telling a story of the scene.

  • Lovely lighting throughout the shot.

  • Shallow depth of field to draw attention to the people.

  • A lovely feeling to whole shot, makes you want to be there.

  • Deliveroo drivers in Hong Kong have better bikes than the UK :)
