Lesson 1 – Intro to your Course and Sujata Setia

An introduction to Sujata Setia, her photography and how the course works. Here Sujata shares her photography journey into the world of professional portraiture. She also talks about why she is so passionate for creating portraits of family and children.

Lesson 2 – Equipment

Being a specialist genre, portraiture needs specialist equipment. You’ll look at cameras, lenses and essential accessories to get refined professional imagery.

Lesson 3 – Camera settings

When working with natural light you really need to keep your eye on the camera settings you use. In this lesson you’ll understand the physics behind good portrait imagery and why it is so hard to achieve. You’ll also learn about specific camera settings, how to expose correctly and many more pro techniques to send your photography to the next level.

Lesson 4 – Understanding Light

The benefit of working with natural light is that you don’t need a studio with expensive lighting, and you can take the pictures anywhere. However, you can’t control natural light in the way you can in a studio. Therefore, a deep understanding of how to use natural light, at any time of the day or year, is needed. In this lesson Sujata gives a masterclass in the use of natural light for portraiture.

Lesson 5 – Guide to posing

Bad posing makes for bad portraits and posing subjects is not as easy as you think. In this lesson Sujata teaches the common mistakes made by photographers, how to avoid them and shares her secrets in how to get families and children to best pose for this style of portraiture.

Lesson 6 – Guide to styling

“Styling is the most important criteria to creating remarkable family images” is how Sujata starts this lesson. Then she delivers an absolute masterclass into sourcing clothing, styling, colour harmony and other invaluable knowledge needed to style your shoot properly.

Lesson 7 – Planning for family portraiture

This lesson is an in depth look at planning for a shoot which includes location finding, how to get ideas and other important info but it goes even deeper than that. You’ll also learn how to prepare your clients for a shoot and get all the legal documentation you need for this kind of fine art shoot.

Lesson 8 – The family portrait

Here we head out on location and follow along with Sujata as she puts all what you’ve been taught into practice. In this lesson you’re taken through 6 separate family portrait shoots, from the lighting, posing, styling, composition and more. This lesson really gives you an insight on how you can achieve stunning fine art family portraits that will be treasured forever.

Lesson 9 – Editing the family portrait

The first of the edit lessons, here you’ll learn the magic of fine art editing! You’re taught all the secrets needed to create this effect in Lightroom and Photoshop. How to make a composite, masking, layer adjustment overlays and much more is needed for this unique effect, and you’re taught it all here. You’re also provided with the raw files so you can work along with Sujata and learn with ease.

The second of our edit lessons, Sujata builds on the first edit lesson by taking you through all her tips and the secrets behind what makes her imagery so special. As usual you are provided with the raw files so you can follow along and learn with ease.

What level do I need to be at?
This course is suited for intermediate photographers, Lightroom and Photoshop users. It is not suited for anyone who hasn’t used Photoshop and Lightroom or learnt about the basics of photography. In this case, please take a look at our Photography, Lightroom and Photoshop courses.

I’m not in the UK, will this course still be suitable for me?
Yes. All skills taught are the same worldwide.

What’s the difference between ‘This course only’ and ‘Become a Member’?

Do I need Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Affinity for this course?
It depends. If you want to follow along with the edits then the answer is yes. However, if you edit your work in a different program then you can simply use the same editing techniques in whatever program you are used to. The raw files provided will open in any editing program that supports raw editing. If you wish to buy Adobe editing software we recommend buying their ‘Photography Plan (20GB)’ which includes Photoshop CC, Lightroom Classic, and Lightroom CC for a monthly fee.
