Course Content
Lesson 1
Intro to Course
An introduction to the course that explains how photographers can use their existing camera skills to confidently move into videography. It outlines who the course is for and provides an overview of the key topics covered, including equipment, sound, filming, editing and storytelling.
Lesson 2
Equipment
This lesson introduces the essential equipment needed for videography. It explains how most photographers already have the core tools required and highlights what is truly important when beginning to film. It focuses on practical guidance — what you need, what’s helpful to have, and how to make the most of the camera gear you already own.
Lesson 3
Videographer vs Photographer
In this lesson, we compare photography and videography, pointing out the similarities, but more importantly, the differences. This lesson is all about setting the technical foundations for you to understand videography and prepare for the more advanced lessons that follow later in this course.
Lesson 4
Sound
Sound is an incredibly important part of videography and contributes to at least 50% of a video’s quality, often more. Poor audio quality hampers the viewing experience significantly, even if the visuals look good. Therefore, choosing the right microphone and recording the best sound possible is essential. This lesson covers both.
Lesson 5
Planning for a shoot
This lesson focuses on the importance of planning before filming a video project. Strong planning forms the foundation of successful videography and helps turn ideas into clear, well-structured films.
Lesson 6
Location Shoot - Creating video content
Here we head out on a shoot. We use all our planning and knowledge and film all the necessary footage needed to create a professional film.
Lesson 7
Organising videos for an edit
Videography projects generate large amounts of footage across multiple devices. Poor organisation slows down editing and increases the risk of lost files. A clear system saves time and reduces stress later in the workflow. This lesson is all about creating a file system that you can use to organise most videography projects.
Lesson 8
Setting up your editing software
There are several popular video editing programs, including Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro. These programs work in broadly similar ways, so skills transfer easily between them. This course uses Adobe Premiere Pro, but the principles apply to all editors.
Lesson 9
Editing your video
This lesson begins the editing stage of the course. The goal is to turn the filmed footage into a finished video while teaching you the core editing skills that will apply to any project.
Lesson 10
Creating social media content
Social media platforms use different aspect ratios than standard video. Our previous edit was created in a ratio of 16:9 for widescreen viewing. From one finished 16:9 video, multiple social media versions can be created easily and this is what you will learn in this lesson.
Lesson 11
Exporting videos
Editing your project within your software creates a working version of your video, not a finished file. Exporting turns your project into a video file that can be shared, uploaded, or delivered. Different uses require different export settings. Here we will look and how and why you export for different purposes.
Lesson 12
Setting up a home studio
Here you’ll learn how to create a home studio. This does not need to be a full photographic studio. It can be a spare room, garage, outbuilding, or home office. The key idea is having a space that’s always ready to film. A home studio allows you to create content quickly and consistently and adds an extra skill and service you can offer as a videographer.
Lesson 13
Creating home studio content
In this lesson you’re taught how to create and edit content in your own home studio.
Lesson 14
Vlogging
Very popular these days but how do you make a good vlog without taking up too much time or expense. Here we look at exactly that.
Lesson 15
Recap
Here revisit all the key techniques, creative insights, and skills you’ve gained throughout the course. This recap ties everything together to inspire your next video project.
